AISG Homework Agreements (Preschool - Grade 5)

Assignments to be completed at home vary according to grade level and subject area. Homework may be assigned so the students can expand on the skills and concepts taught in class, and gain a more thorough understanding from additional independent study. Parents can expect that students will have been introduced to these skills and concepts in class; thus the homework assignments reinforce what has been taught in class.

Homework provides an opportunity for students to follow through with responsibilities and to experience the success of independent learning. Generally, some form of homework will be sent home Monday through Thursday. It can vary from casual reading to research projects. Classroom teachers will share specific homework philosophies with students and parents.

A basic goal for any homework program is to develop from an early age the importance of good study habits so that assignments can be accomplished independently and not directly under teacher or adult guidance. The assignments are the child’s responsibility, not the parents. Parents should be available to help and answer questions, but not to do the work for the child. Following are some simple suggestions as to how to provide the most effective support at home:

Area

Provide a quiet, well-lit area for the child to do his/her assignment. This area should feel comfortable and always be available at homework time.

Routine

Establish a daily time for homework. If there are no homework assignments, the child should use the time for reading. This routine helps establish a commitment to the entire academic process.

Tools

Provide “tools” for doing home assignments: pencils, pens, paper, and a dictionary. A desk or tabletop makes the best place to do homework.

While the following serves as a general guideline for the length of time expected to be devoted to homework each day, it should be noted that there are many variables in establishing a precise gauge of time limits for homework (i.e. students vary in their study habits, time usage, and after school schedules, etc.).

  • Preschool - none
  • Kindergarten - 0-10 minutes
  • Grades 1 and 2 - 20-30 minutes
  • Grade 3 - 30-45 minutes
  • Grade 4 - 45-60 minutes
  • Grade 5 - 45-70 minutes
