Grade 4 Overview

The fourth grade program continues to refine the basic skills. This is highlighted by greater emphasis on independent study including frequent use of available resources for assignments, projects, and presentations. There is continued focus on organizational and study skills to develop independent learners.

Primary Years Programme

The Elementary School has implemented the Primary Years Programme (PYP) of the International Baccalaureate Organization. The PYP is committed to structured, purposeful inquiry, which engages children in their own learning.

Reading/Language Arts

The program focuses on the reading/language arts skills necessary to think creatively, reason critically, and communicate effectively. A variety of reading and writing activities take place every day. These are fully integrated into all subject areas. Reading and writing strategies are further developed through author and novel studies and various genres. The opportunities for research further enable the children to become locators and users of information.

Math
An integrated Math program promotes conceptual, computational, and problem solving proficiency. Problem solving strategies and computational procedures are taught via step-by-step, direct instruction. Daily practice is essential for conceptual development, computational proficiency, and development of reasoning and problem solving strategies.
After School Activities

A robust after school activities program is offered four days a week from 3:15-4:15 p.m. Beginning with the first session, children may select up to two activities per week in the after school activities program.

The following specialist classes enrich the grade four program:

  • Art
  • Music
  • Physical Education (PE)
