Grade 3 Overview

The third grade program is designed to be flexible so that the different learning styles and learning rates of the children are easily accommodated. The traditional academic disciplines are integrated into the curriculum through the six Primary Years Programme (PYP) trans-disciplinary themes, and emphasis is on deepening understanding.

Primary Years Programme

The Elementary School has implemented the Primary Years Programme (PYP) of the International Baccalaureate Organization. The PYP is committed to structured, purposeful inquiry, which engages children in their own learning.

Reading/Language Arts

A balanced literacy program extends reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. A variety of reading and writing activities take place every day. These are fully integrated into all subject areas.Reading and writing strategies are further developed through author and novel studies and various genres. There is a shift from learning to read toward reading to learn.

Math

An integrated Math program promotes conceptual, computational, and problem solving proficiency. Problem solving strategies and computational procedures are taught via step-by-step, direct instruction. Strengthening basic mathematics facts and operations is an emphasis. Daily practice is essential for conceptual development, computational proficiency, and development of reasoning and problem solving strategies.

After School Activities

A robust after school activities program is offered four days a week from 3:15-4:15 p.m. Beginning with the first session, children may select up to two activities per week in the after school activities program.

Specialists

The following specialist classes enrich the grade three program:

  • Art
  • Music
  • Physical Education (PE)
  • Mandarin and ESL
