Technology Introduction
Traditionally, technology programs have involved students in constructing objects to gain manipulative skills and technical knowledge. Such skills, though still important, are balanced by an increased focus on the design process; i.e. the way in which students conceive, develop, and plan their technology solutions. From the very beginning students will be using the design process to formulate solutions to a range of design challenges .

The design process can be thought of as the human response to the perceived difference between the way things are and the way they could be. Design technology is a problem-solving process that may be applied to any of the MYP subject areas. The design cycle lies at the center of this process and takes a prominent role in how technology is presented to students and makes curriculum integration a natural process.

As part of the development of our program we have also begun to integrate aspects of the computer technology curriculum into other subject areas. Consequently, students will increasingly be refining their computer skills within other subject areas.

Technology 6
Grades:
6
Length:
Full year
Description:
This course is designed to develop the way in which students conceive, develop, and plan design technology solutions. From the very beginning students will be using the design process to formulate solutions to a range of design challenges that explore the important themes of our design technology program as well as challenges initiated within cross-curricular planning. These will include food packaging, visual communication, mechanics, and architecture projects.

Later in the year students will be introduced to more advanced graphics applications that will enable them to work with vector and bitmap images.
