Homework Policy Student Homework

Middle School students should expect an average of about 10 hours of homework each week (2 hours / night, including Fridays) This is a guideline only and will vary greatly from student to student depending on each student's ability, study skills, time usage at school and after school activities. However, parents should expect their children to have homework most nights and support them to fulfill their responsibility to complete homework independently. Students are expected to record their homework assignments in their homework diary each class. Teachers will also post homework assignments on First Class. The purpose of homework is to develop good study habits and organization skills, to practice skills and concepts taught in class to gain a more thorough understanding, and to work on long term projects or assignments. Daily reading is also an important part of homework in Middle School.

Parents can support students with homework by :

  • checking their child's homework diary and making sure they are completing their homework
  • showing an interest in what their child is learning and discussing topics with them
  • providing a quiet, well lit desk to do assignments
  • providing materials needed : pens, pencils, paper, dictionary, calculator, ruler, etc.
  • monitor computer use so time is used appropriately and efficiently
  • establish a routine and a daily time to do homework, including daily reading
  • answer questions but do not do the work for your child
