Building Bridges Between Home and School

How Caregivers Shape Learning and Leadership at AISG

At AISG, the strength of our community lies in the partnerships we build. From classrooms to committees, from reading corners to boardrooms, caregivers help shape the learning journey every step of the way.

In our early years classrooms, their presence is part of the rhythm of school life. Each month, BEAR Day (Be Excited About Reading) brings caregivers into the classroom to share stories and foster a love of literacy. Held during the final 30 minutes of the day, this joyful tradition creates a lasting connection between home and school.

That same spirit of collaboration shines through in events like our Lunar New Year celebrations, where families lead activities from dumpling-making to traditional games. In one memorable dim sum workshop, caregivers supported a visiting chef, helping students fold dumplings and connect cultural learning with real-world experience. Whether crafting, cooking, dancing, or storytelling, caregivers help bring learning to life.

Caregivers also enrich units of study through field trips, end-of-unit exhibitions, and community connections like role-play interviews and expert talks. Kindergarten teacher Ruan Cloete shared: “It sounds small, but it reminded us that learning happens in relationships, with joy, with trust, with family.”

He added, “I believe caregivers are the primary experts on their own children. As educators, we should seize every opportunity to engage families in their child’s learning journey, which enhances students' experiences. These opportunities build trust and relationships between the teacher and caregivers. Like the saying goes, it takes a village to raise a child.”

At AISG, that village includes everyone, from classroom volunteers to strategic leaders. Caregivers actively shape the direction of the school through service on the Board of Directors, bringing diverse perspectives and deep personal investment into school governance.

As board member and caregiver Rodrigo Diaz shared: “Serving on the board provides a great opportunity for impactful service in our school and wider community… each person brings different skills and experiences to the board… I enjoy the high commitment and standards brought by every board member and school leader we interact with.”

Cory Reinhart, also a caregiver at AISG added: “It is rewarding to work collaboratively with the board, the School Director and the executive team who are committed to AISG and ensuring we deliver on the promises of the school’s mission and vision every day, both now and the future.”

Families also find meaningful ways to contribute through the AISG Parent Teacher Association (PTA), a caring and compassionate group dedicated to fostering school spirit, strengthening partnerships, and supporting community-wide initiatives. From organizing events to building connections across cultures and grade levels, the PTA plays a vital role in enriching the AISG experience for students and families alike.

Tania Walla, PTA President shared, “Our AISG community is truly connected and our efforts help our community to never give up, look ahead, stay positive and do all we can.”

At every level, caregiver engagement reflects a foundational belief: when families and educators work in partnership, learning becomes more meaningful and truly impactful. Community thrives, culture is strengthened, pride is built, and every student benefits.

Because when we build bridges between home and school, we build a community where every child is seen, valued, and empowered to succeed.
