Student-Led Leadership & Innovation: How AISG Inspires Student Agency
At the American International School of Guangzhou (AISG), student leadership begins on day one. Empowered from the start, AISG students take ownership of their learning, their ideas, and the change they want to create.
Driven by inquiry, student agency and a commitment to global citizenship, students transform their interests into real-world action. Through programs like the Primary Years Programme Exhibition (PYPx), Global Citizenship Education (GCED), CAS in the IBDP, and Global Issues Network (GIN), AISG students design and lead projects that address issues from climate change to community well-being.
Grade 5 student Younha Park discovered her voice for climate action after a fishing trip with her grandfather. “We didn’t catch anything,” she recalled. “He told me the water used to be full of fish. That’s when I realized something was wrong.”
Her concern became action through her PYPx project on climate change. With mentorship and space to lead, Younha launched a campus campaign to reduce plastic waste, and presented her ideas to the school community. “AISG showed me that even small acts can create big change,” she said. “Someday, I want to speak to a big audience about climate change. I want to join the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.”
This early empowerment is The AISG Impact in motion.
AISG alumna Nina Schneider (Class of 2009) experienced that same sense of purpose and possibility during her 13 years at AISG. As a student, Nina founded the Crossroads Club to coordinate disaster relief efforts across China. “AISG listened,” she shared. “They carved out space for us to lead. That support stayed with me.”
Today, Nina runs her own sustainability consulting firm and previously worked as a data analyst for the United Nations. “AISG taught me that being young doesn’t mean being powerless. I learned how to research, take action, and influence others and that’s shaped everything I do today.”
In Secondary School, students like Matthias, Grade 8, are discovering the power of empathy through hands-on service experiences. As part of a family service trip to Crossroads Village in Hong Kong, a partnership between AISG and the Crossroads Foundation, Matthias took part in powerful simulations that offered insight into the challenges faced by refugees and vulnerable communities. “The experience was incredible and difficult to put into words,” he shared. “I was able to empathize with refugees and people in need, and my parents were moved to tears… It inspired me to donate more and get involved in school clubs that help others.”
Through service opportunities, AISG students have tackled global inequality, built community outreach programs for the elderly, and launched campaigns that blend compassion with strategy. These projects are embedded in the learning experience, supported by passionate and caring faculty who mentor students as they grow into leaders.
AISG’s TEDxYouth@AISG event is another example of how AISG gives students a global stage to share their boldest ideas; ideas that make people pause, reflect, and see the world differently. To impact their way of thinking.
“TEDx@AISG provides me with an opportunity to wonder, reflect, and develop an organic idea,” said Eduardo, Grade 10. “My hope is to make my audience wonder - even if it's just a little bit… I worry less about call-to-actions and more about creating moments that inspire thinking and reflection… Once I step off that stage, the fulfillment that follows makes every moment worth it.”
At AISG, leadership is nurtured every day through curiosity, compassion, and the courage to make a difference. Here, students are encouraged to lead now, shaping the world they want to live in.
