American International School of Guangzhou

Elementary Overview

ES Principal Mr. Gary MacPhieES Principal Mr. Gary MacPhieHere at AISG, we are very proud of all our students and their accomplishments. Our school is a place where students study, learn, play and support each other to the best of their ability. We strive to provide a safe and exciting learning environment that promotes students' social, emotional, physical and academic needs. We have approximately 415 students from preschool to grade 5 here at our Er Sha Campus.

The Elementary School at AISG follows the IBO Primary Years Programme (PYP).  The PYP requires our students to be active participants in their own learning.  This is achieved through inquiry based activities, integrating an American and international curriculum with grade level AERO standards and benchmarks. We are preparing our students to become independent and reflective of the world around them. We foster collaboration and stress the importance of a solid foundation of skills and knowledge that includes a shared iPad program for Kindergarten to Grade 3, and a 1:1 iPad program for Grades 4 & 5.  We continue to create and excite during our school day.

Our school has now created new Expected Student Learner Results or ESLR's based on the IBO Learner Profile. These new ESLR standards help our students to foster 21st century skills but also build on a strong, successful academic program. Core subjects of Language Arts, Mathematics, units of inquiry (Science and Social Studies) are all taught by the home-room teachers. We have specialist teachers in art, guidance, music, Physical Education, Chinese, English as a Second Language (ESL) and Learning Support (LS). Our librarian and technology specialist work in tandem with all teachers to support their needs and therefore team-teach or assist with teaching and planning when necessary.

One important aspect of my job is communication between school and home. Please read through our Elementary School handbook as it covers basic rules and procedures and presents a better understanding of the elementary educational program. Parents and students are encouraged to review this handbook at home and refer to it as necessary during the school year.  If you have additional questions that the handbook does not address, please contact your child's teacher or me directly.  Monthly newsletters are sent home through my office and individual grade levels.

We invite you to explore our web site at: www.aisgz.org for more information and photographs of the exciting events that occur in our elementary school. The year of the snake is upon us and we look forward to another successful year full of learning and to have some fun along the way. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me – I welcome your comments and feedback.

My goal each and every day is to make sure all students are safe, happy and learning.

We look forward to welcoming you.
