Reading Brings Us Together!

Every year, the Elementary School celebrates their love of reading with the AISG Literacy Celebration! In March and April, our amazing library team organizes special events and activities for our students to enjoy, read some of the highlights below!

Book Character Parade

A highlight of the month was our first ever Book Character Parade! Students and faculty dressed up as characters from their favorite books and showed off to caregivers. It was such a fun and creative way of showing off their love of reading!

Mystery Readers

Our teachers and administration signed up to be mystery readers – with students having no idea who would be reading to them until they showed up, with only a picture of the person holding a book in front of their face as a hint! What a fun surprise!

Author Visit

Kate O’Hearn, Canadian author of the Pegasus, Titans, and Valkyrie series, visited AISG where she engaged students with her captivating storytelling and insights into the writing process. Students had the opportunity to explore her imaginative worlds and ask questions, sparking their creativity and love for literature.

Saturday at the Library

We hosted a special Saturday at the Library this month! Along with enjoying a read aloud of Room on the Broom, students and caregivers got to play and explore together, brewing magic potions and making magic wands, as well as solving riddles on treasure chests!

Battle of the Books

Battle of the Books returned in April, with Grade 3 battling each other on campus and Grade 4 and 5 traveling to BBSG for the Pearl River Delta Library Competition to compete against students from CIS, SCNUFLS, UISG, NAS-GZ, BSG, and ISD. Our three teams won first, second, AND third place, great job!

Book Swap

A table was set up in front of the library where students were able to bring books from home they’ve already read and swap them for something new! It was a great and sustainable way for our students to read something new.

Reading Bingo

Students played bingo with prompts to complete that let them continue their love of reading at home! Prompts included fun activities like reading with a family member, reading with a pet or stuffed animal, reading while wearing a silly hat, and more!

Bookmark Competition

Our annual bookmark competition made its return! Students showed their creativity with their bookmark designs and our faculty and staff vote on their favorites that will be turned into bookmarks people can pick up from our library.

Other highlights from Literacy Celebration included the door decorating, the Obido book fair, and a poetry post-it wall. A huge shoutout to our library team for putting everything together so that we could celebrate our love of reading!

The Elementary School library is a dynamic, energetic, balanced, and connected learning space. Reading for choice and learning are the primary goals for this space, along with ensuring that students have the skills required to be informed digital citizens and researchers, capable of exploring their own independent inquiries.
