AISG Hosts APAC Theater Festival
AISG hosted the 2024 APAC Theater Festival last week, with student performers from ISB, WAB, CISS, SASPX, and SASPD attending the event.

The theme for this year’s workshop was ‘A journey of a thousand miles begins with a simple step’, a famous Chinese proverb attributed to Laozi. The symbol for the festival was the red boat, which represents the red boat troupes who performed Cantonese opera in the Pearl River Delta.

To start off the festival, our students watched a beautiful Cantonese opera performance, which was a wonderful way for us to celebrate the culture of our host city. Students then spent the day at Yongqingfang learning about the different aspects of Cantonese opera.

Split into groups, students learned about Cantonese opera make-up and costumes and designed their own masks with their own choice of colors and design. Students also got to try on traditional costumes and use them in their performances, which they learned about as well. They also learned about the role of martial arts in Cantonese opera and modern and traditional movements, themes, characters, and sounds.

Every school that attends performs pre-prepared pieces that they’ve spent time writing and rehearsing related to the theme of the festival. This year, our students performed a piece titled “Going Up”, where students explored life’s ups and downs and stops and starts, recognizing that sometimes starting is the hardest part.

Students are also divided into mixed ensembles, with at least one student from each school in an ensemble. Together, they spent Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning devising and rehearsing a short performance using the skills they learned at Yongqingfang related to the theme of the festival. They then showcase the performances as the grand finale of the festival.

The APAC Theater Festival is a vibrant celebration of performing arts that provides students with the opportunity to learn, grow, and showcase their creative talents. It is also a wonderful community event where students rekindle old connections and make new ones – students are given time to socialize and visitors experience Guangzhou and see the city’s sights.

A huge round of applause for all our student performers! Their passion and creativity are evident in their hard work and beautiful performances.

AISG's Visual and Performing Arts program is designed to provide our students with experiences to develop curiosity, interest, and enjoyment of their own creativity and an appreciation for others' work. Click here to learn more about the arts at AISG.
