Alumni Spotlight: Lucy Weng, Class of 2012

Today, we are featuring Lucy Weng, an AISG alumna from the class of 2012. Lucy maintains a close relationship with AISG, serving as the secretary of the AISG Alumni Association Board and co-chair of the Event Committee. She is also a highly skilled and successful brand consultant and designer who is making waves in the art and fashion industry in Guangzhou!

Through her strong connection to AISG, she actively engages with our RamNation community in various ways, including her art exhibitions "WOMEN IN FLOW." Last March, Lucy launched the MORDORF exhibition, "WOMEN IN FLOW: Chapter 1." The exhibition highlighted the artwork of vibrant women from AISG, including current students and alumni. Lucy is now working on the upcoming MORDORF x Photographer Rex Liang exhibition, “WOMEN IN FLOW: Chapter 2: Blossoming,” showcasing MORDORF’s art workshops and Rex Liang's fashion photography.

Let's learn more about Lucy's creative journey and how her connections with AISG continue to make a positive impact for our community.

Please tell us about yourself.

Hello, I’m Lucy Weng. My journey with AISG began in 2008 when my family moved from Toronto, Canada. I spent four years at AISG alongside my siblings and fellow AISG alumni, Mabel Weng (Class of 2013) and Justin Weng (Class of 2015). Currently, I am a project partner at Huidu Creative Group, where I have a dynamic role that includes designing collections, planning and executing events, engaging in public relations, and more. I also love pursuing creative ventures that align with my personal interests and values, such as collaborating with environmentally conscious creatives for the sustainable sneaker brand Fullup. Additionally, I am proud to be a co-founder of an innovative creative company specializing in plant-based dye lifestyle products.

What are some of your lasting memories from your time at AISG?

Some of my most enduring memories from my time at AISG include the invaluable friendships I formed with my schoolmates and teachers (most of whom I am still in contact with to this day), the vibrant multicultural environment that broadened my perspective, and the rich array of experiences from China Trips to participating in various extracurricular service activities. Additionally, the supportive and nurturing community at AISG played a pivotal role in shaping my personal and academic growth. These memories continue to be a cherished part of my journey and have left a lasting impact on my life.

What inspired you to become a member of the Alumni Association Board and how has your experience been so far?

My inspiration to become a member of the Alumni Association Board stemmed from a deep desire to give back to the institution that played a pivotal role in shaping my life. AISG was not just a school for me; it was a community that nurtured my personal and academic growth. I wanted to contribute to its continued success and support current students in their journey, just as I had been supported during my time there.

My experience on the Alumni Association Board has been incredibly rewarding. It has provided me with the opportunity to reconnect with fellow alumni, engage in meaningful initiatives, and foster a sense of belonging within the AISG community. Being part of this Board has allowed me to give back to the school that gave me so much and has been a source of personal and professional fulfillment. I've had the privilege of working with dedicated individuals who share a passion for our alma mater, and together, we've been able to make a positive impact on the AISG community.

Could you walk us through your creative process for designing the Art Workshop Collection for the upcoming exhibition, “WOMEN IN FLOW: Chapter 2: Blossoming?”

The creative inspiration draws from the roles and rules of chess pieces, with a twist of imagination influenced by Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking Glass. In chess, the pieces include the King, Queen, Rook, Bishop, Knight, and Pawn, all played on an 8x8 black-and-white board that simulates a medieval battlefield of power struggles.

In Carroll's mirrored world, Alice encounters absurd characters such as the King, Queen, White Knight, and twin brothers on various squares of the chessboard. Their nonsensical conversations parody and metaphorically reflect the realities of the world outside.

In the chess game of life, we all play various roles—King, Queen, Bishop, Knight, Rook, and Pawn. Each character operates on a distinct timeline and dimension, whether linear or transcendent. At what point in our life journey can we truly identify our own strength, break free from the rules of the game, and shatter the mirror that confines us?

What inspired the exhibition “WOMEN IN FLOW: Chapter 2: Blossoming” and what can attendees expect to see?

In 2024, MORDORF launched the art exhibition project "WOMEN IN FLOW: Chapter 1," rooted in the brand's philosophy of "practical artism." This initiative showcased diverse forms of artistic expression to present an undefined female identity and multifaceted perspectives, exploring contemporary free spirit.

The exhibition continues to expand on the concept of "free flow," with the theme "Blossoming." Flowers serve as a narrative vehicle, intertwining imagery and fashion to create visually striking expressions that declare the vibrancy of life, transcending boundaries of gender and time. Immersed in this experience, attendees are invited to awaken their inner strength and passion.

Throughout the art workshop series, red roses have been thoughtfully integrated into the designs, with flowing lines that outline the flowers' forms projected onto the garments. The interplay of floral patterns and fabric textures breathes new life into the pieces, while the bold red serves not only as a visual focal point but also as a symbol of the fusion of feminine strength and grace—a tribute to contemporary women who continually challenge themselves and break barriers.

We invite you to come and discover more at the exhibition, running now until November 20 at Fui Space.
