Implementing the MYP

What is the MYP?

The Middle Years Program (MYP) is part of the International Baccaleaurate (IB) Programme, offering a curriculum for students from Grades 6 through 10, offered between the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) and the IB Diploma Programme (IBDP). Through the implementation of the MYP, AISG will become an IB Continuum School, meaning that we offer IB programs from preschool all the way through Grade 12.

AISG MYP Programme

Why MYP for AISG?

Implementing the MYP is a part of our new Mission & Vision framework and relates to becoming empowered in education (our mission) and becoming global citizens (our vision). The MYP offers interdisciplinary experiences for students and provides a great pathway for students to transition to the IBDP, which has already been implemented at AISG for many years. The MYP also encourages critical thinking, explores global challenges, encourages international-mindedness, and provides connections between subjects. All of these are goals that AISG strives for in our curriculum.

AISG Mission and Vision

Learning in the MYP

The IB learner profiles, which our students already learn in the PYP, are continued in the MYP. These are 10 attributes valued by IB World Schools and provide great pathways for helping students become responsible members of local, national, and global communities. The MYP also offers a Grade 10 personal project, which is not unlike the PYP Exhibition that students take on in Grade 5 and the CORE projects in the Diploma Programme such as the Extended Essay, TOK, and CAS.

The IB Learner Profile

The MYP helps students develop both subject-specific and interdisciplinary understanding. This means that it helps students learn how to learn by developing skills for research, critical and creative thinking, communication, collaboration, and self-management. It also provides students with key and related concepts, helping students explore big ideas that matter, as well as global context for students to understand in their studies the importance of their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet.

PYP MYP and DP Programme

The MYP helps students understand how to learn by developing approaches to learning skills in research, critical and creative thinking, communication, collaboration, and self-management. As the AISG Secondary program has already developed strong content, skills, and understandings within our current curriculum, the MYP will provide subjects with key and related concepts, where students explore big ideas that matter, in addition to global contexts, which provide a common language for powerful contextual leaning from an interdisciplinary lens.

Our MYP Coordinator & Faculty

We have started the process of implementation led by our MYP Coordinator, Ms. Lauren Robles. With the administrative team, the MYP Coordinator will oversee the process of authorization with the IBO, guide the implementation of the program, and educate the community. We also currently have teachers with previous MYP experience or training in every MYP subject group. During our transition, we also plan to support external MYP training as well as set aside Wednesday Professional Development time for training and work time.
